TOOLS

Spontaneous Continuity

A generative, interactive, audio-visual installation powered by sound.

We started with a simple idea: to drive visual art with audio. From there, we partnered with Speciation Cellars in Grand Rapids, Michigan to create an installation inspired by their wild ale brewing technique.

The process of brewing wild ale begins with carefully curating the environment for success, then stepping back, allowing bacteria and yeast to do their work. Ideally, this setup results in wonderful funky or tart flavors. “Spontaneous fermentation” with natural yeast can be a gamble – but when the process succeeds – it creates a complex, irreplaceable beverage. We saw this idea could be reflected in generative music and visuals.

Intentionally composed music + probabilistic programming =
nuanced and sometimes unexpected variations

The result was a piece of ambient projection art and music with interactions that guests could explore.

Spontaneous Continuity brought new customers through the doors and created a curious, calm atmosphere. The piece didn’t demand attention, but provided a pleasant moment of intrigue and novelty for guests.

"At Speciation we have a very music-centric focus, and we love pushing the boundaries of what a taproom can be for the local community. Sanctus created a unique, interesting, and entertaining experience for our space."

— Mitch Ermatinger, Owner of Speciation Cellars
